Two Strips of Latinum: And the Nominees Are:

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the Prime Time Emmy awards last week and they are interesting for science fiction fans. After going over the 36 page PDF of nominations, here are the science fiction shows nominated and how many they were nominated for:

Andromeda Strain: 7

Battlestar Galactica: 6

Heroes: 3

Masters of Science Fiction; 1

Smallville: 1

Stargate Atlantis: 1

Supernatural: 1

Terminator The Sarah Conner Chronicles: 3

Tin Man: 9

As you can see, this was a good year for the genre. However, I am in a bit of shock that Tin Man is nominated for Best Miniseries. That one leaves me wondering if the judges for the Academy watched the same show I did. To be very blunt and honest, it does not deserve that one. Now, most of the rest I can see and understand as they were technical awards and let's be honest, when it comes to technical, science fiction rules. But Tin Man was far away from qualifying for Best Miniseries in this writer's opinion. The simple reason is that the show did not deliver what it was advertised to do. It was not a reimaged version of the story, but a disguised sequel. It was high tech, good special effects, and a cast that did the absolute best they could with the script they were handed, but best miniseries? I'm sorry, but I'll pass on that glass of Kool Aid.

The one comfort I can take is that it already had no chance of winning that one award as I believe HBO is going to walk away from this year's Emmy's with a load of them for their miniseries, John Adams.

Laying aside the Tin Man nomination, the rest of the nominations that were science fiction were a very good number and all very deserving. Andromeda Strain getting 7 nominations was surprising and very deserved at the same time. Battlestar Galactica getting 6 was wonderful. Stargate Atlantis only getting 1 was highway robbery, and Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles getting 3 along with Heroes was a wonderful surprise for that show, which was one of the best on Fox last year.

The awards will be handed out September 21st and I'll be watching along with everyone to see how these shows do that night.

Of Bats and Spiders

Jill and I were at the theater to catch the midnight showing of The Dark Knight Friday morning. She will be reviewing it in her column this week. All I will say is, if you are still debating whether or not to see it, I've got two words for you: SEE IT!

I am delighted that it broke Spiderman 3's record in the box office. My one regret is that Bob Kane didn't live to see it as he would have been picking on his friend, Stan “The Man” Lee about it for a very long time. For further information about Kane's and Lee's relationship, check out the biography on Kane which is one of the special features on Batman: Gotham Knight.

Ain't That Weird: Kids in Copenhagen, Denmark had better be on their best behavior this week as the World Santa Claus Congress is set to open it's annual three day run starting today. The delegates all go by different names for the jolly old elf, but the amusement park says that all of them are real Santas. The event, now in it's 51st year, brings in over a hundred of the red clad gentlemen who will be in attendance and taking part in various fun events, including Hula Hoop dancing, and a dip in the Copenhagen Harbor.

Over a hundred Santas? A naughty kid hasn't got a chance!

Think about it.
