Star Trek Spotlight: Montaigne's Tale, Part 2

Lawrence Montaigne's autobiography "A Vulcan Odyssey" is a fascinating account of the life and career of this versatile actor, now in his seventies.

MontaigneAs a very frequent convention attendee myself, I had seen Mr. Montaigne in the signing rooms and on panels at several conventions. Last year I decided to add to my collection of signed books (if you are ever wondering what to get me for my birthday, an autographed book is a very welcome gift), and I was particularly interested in show-business biography.

My interests happened to coincide at the Grand Slam Convention in Pasadena. Spotting Montaigne at his table, I headed over. When I asked how much the book was, he replied "Twenty dollars with my autograph, twenty five without it." My returning glance must have appeared curious at this incongruous pricing. "Don't ask" was his comment, with a smile. He personalized the book, and included a hand-signed collectible trading card showing him in an appearance on "The Outer Limits."

One favorite anecdote: after taking dance lessons (in an attempt to get close to a particular girl, a theme prevalent throughout the book), he found himself auditioning for dance roles. Selected for one challenging part, somehow beating out dozens of more-qualified terpsichoreans, he met privately with the director. Montaigne told the director that he felt he lacked the experience to take the job, that he was really an actor. The director asked if he was a good actor, and Montaigne confidently replied that he was. "Then show up Monday morning and act like a dancer!" was the director's order.

When next I attend a convention, I plan to stop by and tell him how much I enjoyed reading his story.

Needless to say, I highly recommend his book, which can be ordered (signed!) from his site, Montaigne's Web.

Remastered Trivia

Lawrence Montaigne made two guest appearances on Time Tunnel, which starred James Darren (later to recur as "Vic Fontaine" on DS9) and Lee Meriwether (who would appear as "Losira" in the episode "That Which Survives" in the third season of the original series). Thanks to Barbara Hamper for being the first in with the correct answer.

Bonus trivia: Which other Time Tunnel regular cast member had a key role in one of the most memorable original-series episodes? Name the actor and the episode.
